We all know the PATRIOT Act exists, but many people don't even know what the acronym stands for or how it can affect their lives. Under this law, our civil liberties have been altered and reduced. It is up to us to protect our freedoms, and our best defense is knowing our rights and actively exercising them. The DBI will be conducting a nation-wide information campaign in begining in August to encourage people to speak out against the Act.
Since the passage of the USA PATRIOT Act, there has been little public discussion of the Act's contents or ramifications. Few people know that many of the Acts provisions are 'sunset' laws and will expire at the end of this year unless Congress renews them. Increased public attention can greatly affect the outcome of this vote. The issue could not be more urgent.
The PATRIOT Initiative is designed to help increase awareness and understanding of the Act by providing a network for the distribution of clear, concise information. It will also provide a forum for the organizing local action. For more information and to find out how to get involved, see the information below and the urgent action listings on the Volunteer page.
URGENT UPDATE: Before winter recess, the US Senate will vote on whether or not to make the provisions of the PATRIOT Act permanent. There is growing opposition, however, with some Senate Republicans (Sens. Chuck Hagel R-Neb., and John Sununu, R-NH.) declaring their intent to vote against the Act.
It is crucial that we act now. Tell your elected offcials that you want them to protect your freedoms by voting against the USA PATRIOT Act.

From August 3rd - 19th, the DBI conducted a nation-wide PATRIOT Initiative Tour. DBI Agents traveled coast-to coast to distribute information about the Act. Check the map at the bottom of the page for a complete tour schedule.
Volunteer opportunities are posted on our Volunteer page. Take a look and see how you can help!
