Joseph A. Esser

"The things that trouble me most are the very things that most inform my work. That said, I frequently find myself troubled by, or at odds with, the notion that we live in a socially constructed world wherein issues so fundamentally crucial to our relationships with both the natural and human domains are decided for us rather than by us. Consequently, I believe it is vitally important for the individual to not only carefully consider but also to openly convey his or her opinions about these matters to the various individuals and/or institutions whose decisions we are at the mercy of. My work speaks to this by engaging the individual as both a viewer and a participant, thus encouraging reflection on the distinction between passive and active roles in the matter at hand and, hence, different degrees of personal responsibility."

Mr. Esser studied architecture at Drury University in Springfield, MO from 1998 to 2000 and at Kansas State University from 2000 to 2001. He received an Associate of Arts degree from State Fair Community College in Sedalia, MO in 2004. He earned a BFA in sculpture from Missouri State University in 2007 and began his MFA studies at SUNY Stony Brook, NY in the Fall of 2007.
