Apparitions, 1994
documentation website
A collaboration by Vital Signs (Sheldon Brown, Christa Erickson, Timothy Nohe, Kelly Coyne, Mark Tribe, Niklas Vollmer, Emile Devereaux, and others).
Apparitions is both a physical installation and a computer generated virtual environment. |
|
As a new and much discussed technology of representation, Virtual Reality raises and reiterates a host of questions about ourselves and the world. Presented as a virtual clinic, Apparitions playfully explores the revolutionary and restrictive possibilities of these technologies and their difficult histories. Viewer's navigate the virtual clinic in their lazy-boy wheelchair, exploring the space with their 3D tracking toy gun and joystick. Rooms start realistically and morph into fantasy spaces like the centrifuge carousel pictured above. Flanking video imagery and sound is triggered by user actions and a cyberguide with multiple personas provides guidance along the way.
