Final Project- VIDEO AND SOUND PIECE

A rough cut or presentation of what you are planning is due the last day of class. The final version is due Monday May 13 by 3pm to be included in the final public screening on May 14.

This is a finished artwork and not an exercise. It is more important to have a work of ART that makes aesthetic sense than something too complex or full of a lot of bells and whistles and not much substance. Sometimes simple actually IS better.

This project may be done individually or as a group. You can work in a group so long as all roles are significant and clearly credited. Even if the piece is done individually, you may have others crew, act, or help on one aspect of the work so long as you credit them (this could be people within or outside the class) and your direction/writing/camera/etc is the most significant part of the work. Collaborative groups might break down along the lines of writer, sound, and camera or other typical film roles.

REQUIREMENTS - Your piece needs to:

  • Use image/narrative and sound in an interesting manner. It can be heavily image or heavily sound, but must have both to some degree.
  • The way the piece is edited must be appropriate to title, theme, narrative, or idea of the work. That is, you should use the editing to reinforce or convey the idea of the work. For example, a piece about speed should not be made up of 3 similar long slow shots; it would most likely be better to edit it with lots of short shots or varying long and short shots so that we feel a sense of speed or change of speed in the way the piece is constructed.
  • You can do a single-channel tape that is poetic, personal, humorous, or more documentary-like (if you can be original about the materials/subject). You might also try a twist on a known genre or convention of video or film (horror, news show, commercial, etc.).
  • You might try your hand at some simple animation or mix animation and video. Be sure to discuss with Christa to make sure your idea is doable.
  • You may do a performance or create a sculptural piece or installation rather than a "tape" work if you prefer. If you want to do something with video projection, talk to us about times to work with a projector. If you want help finding a space to put up the piece near the final screening, please speak to us asap.
  • Have original sound or a VERY good reason why not. Discuss this with Meg (or Travis) before you assume you can use found sound. If you do not, you will lose a lot of credit on your grade.
  • Have an appropriate title and credits.
  • Be "long enough," but not "too long." (between 2 minutes and 10 minutes).

REMEMBER: If you use found material/someone else's material in any way, you must:
1. Provide a citation in the credits. In other words, tell use where you got the image, sound, etc. and who made it.
2. Have a real justification for using found material/someone else's work. We will ask you about this in the critique, and this could very seriously hurt your grade.

EVALUATION - Your piece should be a "finished" work.

You will be graded on:

  • Conceptual and aesthetic quality of finished work.
  • Conceptual and technical investment of time.
  • Technical execution/craft level.
  • Responsibility to the group (if you do a collaboration).

We will critique it in LECTURE and LAB. Place the final rendered Quicktime movie in AMT 318 Dropbox in her Public folder on the emediavault.

NOTE: We will put one of your works into the final screening at a minimum and possibly both pieces. If you have a reedited version of the first project, hand it in the last week for possible screening.
