"Language of the Moving Image" - Ross

Due March 3rd on paper or via email.

1) Explain what a "jump cut" is and why you might want to avoid it. What methods could you use in place of it to move from one shot to another?

2) Explain what an "intercut" is and why/how it might be used.

3) Define "montage". Give an example. How is this different from standard Hollywood film conventions? How would you describe standard Hollywood film conventions?

4) Define "decoupage".

5) What is a "match cut"? List 3 types of "match" and give an example.

6) Pick a favorite film. Talk about the way it establishes the "time" of the film (how do we know the amount of time the film covers and how it is organized in the linear structure of the film). Talk about how it constructs our knowledge of the space within which the events take place.

7) Why does a Foley artist need twenty-five kinds of surfaces?

8) What adjustments need to be made for footsteps for different characters?

9) How do you do Foley for a group of characters?

10) Why is Foley so physical?

11) What is a sample library? Explain the benefits of Foley over a sample library.
